Cal Ripken and the Orioles of my youth

I feel that not enough has been said lately in congratulations of my boy Cal who was voted into the Baseball hall of fame. It makes me nostalgic for my teenage years when going to a baseball game meant seeing him playing shortstop, revered almost as deity in my hometown.

So I thought in honor of Cal, I would show you two of my prized possessions. First is a set of nesting dolls that I bought in Prague in 2001. I love these guys. You can't see but on the backs, their names are spelled wrong, "Orioles" is spelled wrong on the next-to-smallest, and truthfully, some of them that seem to be painted like African Americans actually aren't in person. Its hilarious. Cal is the biggest one, if you couldn't recognize his more distinctive features. I personally have always gotten a kick of the tiniest one being Brady Anderson, because Brady always struck me as being a little big-headed. But maybe that's just me.

Then, I have a collection of newspaper and magazine clippings from the Streak days. Mom sent them to me in Israel because that's where I was when the Streak was broken. I have faithfully put them up in every apartment I've ever lived in--makes me feel more at home, I suppose.
I made a collage here with various postcards and snapshots that are sentimental to me. Its on the closet door in my office, where I can see cool places I've visited, but also, a little slice of my Baltimore home. (Some of the clippings were getting a little too worn from being hung on closet doors all over creation, so I settled for this one, although its not my favorite.)

I love the nesting dolls. Unique to say the least. I knew you would be interested in Cal's election to the Hall. Maybe when you're home some year we'll go visit and you can touch his plaque.

Do you know who the two men are that are in the Hall of Fame that never played baseball?

OH yeah, I almost forgot; I see your favorite picture is almost lost in the glare of the flash. %)

dad, great idea about going to the Hall of Fame. that would be really cool. And yes, Eagle-eyes, my favorite picture is hanging at eye level. On bad days, it can always cheer me up. I figured with the glare from the flash, it should only be recognizable to those who know it well. I can't get yelled at that way, right?

I too noticed that fantastic picture in the glare. Maybe you could shoot an up-close of that and post it.

On the night that Cal got the call WBAL did a big tribute to him including rebroadcasting the 2131 game. Wow, those were great days of baseball. I'm not sure they'll ever come back.

Janice, that picture is worth its weight in gold to me. Its the best school picture that girl ever had. The expression on her face that makes it priceless!

I too am amazed by the quick accumulation of comments. Whenever I mention sports, you people are tripping over each other to post a comment. Anybody out there have a great Orioles moment that they want to share?

I like the haircut. If you put a "Donate Now" button on your site, you could raise money to post that picture.

I got engaged on Eutaw street in the stadium.

Yum, Mom's corn dogs! I remember seeing the O's play at Royal Stadium when we were on vacation in Kansas City. I don't remember anything about the game, but I remember it felt weird to be cheering for Orioles in the middle of a bunch of Royal fans (in their stadium no less). Plus, their stadium wasn't as picturesque as Camden Yards.

HEY! I made sure that glare was there for a reason. But if we're going to start namecalling, this could get ugly. Jenny Wilner ugly.
