Make New Friends, But Keep the Old

As the old Girls Scouts song goes, "Make new friends, but keep the old; one is silver and the other, gold." While I've enjoyed making new friends this past weekend at the Re-Entry program, now we are in the School of Missions program, where all the returning missionaries come for two weeks of training and renewal, and I get to see old friends. There are at least 500 missionaries swarming this campus (not including their children!); we represent only a portion of the 2,700 missionary adults of the American Assemblies of God serving around the world. In the crowds of missionaries at mealtimes and in our sessions, I'm seeing more and more familiar faces: people I went to college with, people from my district, people from Africa, Europe, and the Middle East where I've worked, etc.
Last night when I walked into the dining hall, which was decorated for a formal welcome banquet, I heard my name being called, "Ariel! Ariel!" When I turned around, there were Mark and Kathy Daniels, my surrogate family during my first year in Israel. I babysat their children, used their internet, and practically lived at their house. My mother even stenciled their living room when she visited me.
I hadn't seen the Daniels since 1997, when I drove down to Nags Head, NC to visit them before they headed out to India to continue their missions career. Although over the years, we've exchanged newsletters and Christmas cards, I've never had the chance to catch up with them. Unfortunately, we didn't have much of a chance last night, either, but we will definitely make time later this week (because they want to show me pictures of their grandchildren!).
That's just one of the families I've seen--there are so many more. I'm so blessed to have worked with so many great missionaries over the years.

c'est beau de voir comment Dieu te permet de renouer avec des anciens amis que tu avais perdus de vue. Il prend vraiment soin de toi et de tes relations, et Il te montre que même si à cause de ton ministère tu es obligée de quitter des gens que tu aimes très souvent, le lien de l'Amour n'est jamais rompu pour autant. je suis touchée de voir à quel point tu es bénie par cette conférence tant spirituellement qu'émotionnellement.
dont forget as well your ex-new french friends, who have become now old ones (but never as old as the daniels !!!).

Ariel, it is amazing to think about how many lives you have come in contact with and what an opportunity you have had to be a positive Christian influence. God has definatly broadened your horizons and extended your territory as the Prayer of Jabez says. I pray that He continues to bless you. Beth

Continuing the “catch-up” on old posts . . . Feb. 25, 2006 I thought you would enjoy the (mis)adventures of my day today. Ethan Allen Faith in an Ikea World

I had a conversation with my brother recently, while moving furniture, that Ethan Allen furniture is really great stuff. It's built to last forever, and it's worth the high price. Unfortunately, most people can't afford to decorate their entire home in one fell swoop from expensive furniture stores, so half of their furniture is hand-me-downs, a few pieces are high quality, and a few pieces are from places like Ikea. You can only afford to do so much at one time, and when you first move into a new home, you need things immediately--beds to sleep in, tables to eat on. You get what you need at the moment. The problem is that you get what you pay for; buying furniture from Ikea means you'll have to replace it in about three years. In the past few months, I've dealt with a few things spiritually that have been difficult for me. I was praying this weekend about it, and I questioned God about these particular trials. The Shadow Proves the Sunshine

I have a commute to work every day. Until our office moves in a few weeks, I continue to drive thirty minutes to work and thirty minutes back. I spend that time either deep in thought—once I even missed my exit—or singing at the top of my lungs. I suppose it depends on my mood. I try to redeem the time by listening to French music, learning through musical osmosis, if you will. But sometimes I take a break and this week I am listening to Switchfoot ’s second album, Nothing is Sound . My brother and I are both fans of Switchfoot, and we spent some time over my vacation discussing the merits of our various favorite songs. Until this week, I wouldn’t have said much about the song, “The Shadow Proves the Sunshine.” It’s got a fairly singable melody, but it wasn’t one that jumped out at me.
